One print entitled The Phoenix and the Rose engaged by the enemy's fire ships... on the 16th August dated May 2, 1778. Aquatint with original watercolor wash, occupying lower half of sheet, below "References" referring to map of New York. The upper half has a list of lettered references referring to the Map of New York (GLC10031), with which it is conjugate. This copy is the second state, showing (dimly) the Palisades in background. (The first state lacks the Palisades and imprint.) Stokes and Haskell, American Historical Prints (p. 29; B100, state 2) note that this is "one of the very few naval prints of the Revolutionary periods and the first to show American ships in action." Quite rare.
