January 1 – 29, 2013 Location: Peace Learning Center, 6040 DeLong Road, Indianapolis, IN Exhibitions

Freedom Riders, a traveling panel exhibition, follows the story of more than four hundred Americans who participated in a dangerous experiment in 1961 designed to awaken the nation’s conscience. Inspired by visions of social revolution, the self-proclaimed “Freedom Riders” challenged the mores of a racially segregated society by performing a disarmingly simple act—traveling together in small interracial groups and sitting where they pleased on buses and trains. Developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute, the exhibition is a companion to the American Experience film produced for PBS with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
