The Gilder Lehrman Teaching Literacy Through History program launched during the 2012–2013 school year with much success. The program helps teachers integrate history and literacy and aligns with the national movement to adopt the Common Core State Standards. TLTH ensures a place for history in the classroom involving close reading of primary source texts—a teaching practice Gilder Lehrman has been developing for the past twenty years. We partnered with 25 schools in the Archdiocese of New York to pilot the Teaching Literacy Through History program. Teachers reported greatly improved instruction and increased student reading and writing skills.
