Description: Signed by John Nutter and Richard Lamb, who certify that Cuffee Wells, a former slave, had enlisted in the Continental Army. Nutter and Lamb attest to the sum paid to Wells for his service. Signed by Huntington as Justice of the Peace, who confirms that Wells' former commander, Captain Jedediah Hyde of Norwich, "always understood that the money that was given to Cuffee at his Enlistment Purchased his Freedom."
Annotation: Huntington served as a member of member of the Connecticut state senate 1781-1790 and 1791-1793, as Mayor of Norwich from 1784-1796, and as a member of the First Congress 1789-1791.
