a Nation: America in the Eighteenth Century

Professor Berkin and the teacher participants will
examine colonial society in the decades before the Revolution,
the events that led to the struggle for Independence
and the experience of nation-building in the aftermath
of the war. The seminar will take full advantage of
the historic sites and educational facilities in Philadelphia,
including Independence Hall, the National Constitution
Center, and the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial.

READINGS
Readings are sent by the Institute to participants of
the seminar. Readings MAY include:

American Constitution. New York: Harcourt, 2002.
- Betty Wood, The Origins of American Slavery: Freedom
and Bondage in the English Colonies. New York: Hill
and Wang, 1997.
TRAVEL
There are several options for
traveling to and from Philadelphia. The
The Philadelphia International Airport is located approximately
eight miles from the Holiday
Inn, Historic District. There are several options
for transportation from the airport to the hotel. A
shuttle service is available for $8.00 each way. Please
call the Holiday Inn at 215-923-8660 for more information.
Taxi service is also available and will cost approximately
$27.00 each way. For more information and driving directions
please visit the hotel website.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Workshop participants will be housed in the Holiday
Inn, Historic District (400 Arch Street, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania). Each room features cable or satellite
television, internet connection, telephones, iron and
ironing board, coffee/tea maker and hairdryer. The Holiday
Inn offers free access to its on-site fitness center
and on-site outdoor pool. Parking is available on-site
for $20.00 per day. The Holiday Inn is located just
a few short blocks from the National
Constitution Center. Please note that seminar participants
will be sharing rooms.
MEALS
Meals will be served at the National Constitution Center
or local restaurants and paid for by the Gilder Lehrman
Institute of American History.
TEMPERATURE AND
CLOTHING
In July the temperatures range from the 70s in the evening
to the 80s and 90s during the day. Since it is difficult
to predict the weather, pack articles of clothing that
may be layered to accommodate a range of temperatures.
In case of rain, be sure to pack an umbrella. Dress
is casual during the day. Since you will be doing some
walking, be sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking
shoes and a hat or other head covering.
GRADUATE CREDIT
Pittsburg
State University (PSU) is pleased to offer graduate
credit to workshop participants at a tuition fee
of $199 per credit hour. Participants can receive three
graduate credit hours for the duration of the week.

is June 1, 2009. PSU has national NCATE
accreditation.
If you plan on transferring graduate credits please
ask your higher education institution if it will accept
transfers, especially toward degree programs.
ACADEMIC RESOURCES
The Gilder Lehrman Institute will arrange for computer
access and printer services to be available to participants
during the week. Throughout the workshop participants
will have limited access to computer labs and equipment
for Internet research, word processing, and printing.
Classrooms located at the National Constitution Center
will be used for workshops. These classrooms are equipped
with the technological capabilities to accommodate presenters
using a variety of media.
STIPEND
Participating teachers will receive a stipend of $400
to help cover travel expenses. All participants are
required to attend all workshop sessions to receive
full stipends. Participants who do not complete the
full tenure of the project will receive a reduced stipend.
We will present stipend checks to participants prior
to departure. Stipends are taxable. Reporting is the
responsibility of the participant.
