Etching of Abraham Lincoln. (Detail, GLC 05111.02.0022)

The Global Lincoln
A three-day seminar in cooperation with
Lincoln's Legacy: An International Conference
July 3-July 5, 2009
St. Catherine's College, Oxford University

More than any other American figure, Abraham Lincoln became after his death a global figure, one who spoke – and continues to speak – to peoples across the world. Co-sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the University of Oxford, “The Global Lincoln” will explore the international legacy of the Sixteenth President in the bicentenary of his birth.

Twenty teachers will be chosen to attend the seminar and conference. Participants will meet daily to discuss the presentations and develop document-based teaching strategies.

For more information on the conference please visit: http://www.rai.ox.ac.uk/lincoln/Home.html

TRAVEL
Participants may fly into London Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, or London Stansted Airport. Each Airport provides service to Oxford by bus.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Workshop participants will be housed at St. Catherine's College. Participants will have their own bedrooms but may share a bathroom and common areas. All participants will be provided with linens and towels. Please note that participants should plan to bring alarm clocks, shower shoes, hangers, irons, and hair dryers.

MEALS
Meals will be served on campus in spaces that may be shared with other programs. All meals are paid for by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

TEMPERATURE AND CLOTHING
In July the temperatures range in the 60s and 70s. Since it is difficult to predict the weather, pack articles of clothing that may be layered to accommodate a range of temperatures. In case of rain, be sure to pack an umbrella. Dress is casual during the day. Since you will be doing some walking, be sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a hat or other head covering.

STIPEND
Participating teachers will receive a stipend of $500 to help cover travel expenses. All participants are required to attend all workshop sessions to receive full stipends. Participants who do not complete the full tenure of the project will receive a reduced stipend. We will present stipend checks to participants prior to departure. Stipends are taxable. Reporting is the responsibility of the participant.
