T he Institute sponsors a growing roster of seminars each summer for public, parochial, and independent school teachers, Park Service educators, and college professors. In addition, the Institute sponsors a History Scholars summer program for undergraduates. These seminars provide participants with the chance to study an important topic in American history with an eminent scholar in the field, at major institutions including Harvard, Columbia, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, and Monticello.

Summer Seminars for Teachers

Each summer since 1994, the Institute has offered selected teachers the opportunity to devote a week of intensive study with distinguished experts to such subjects as George Washington, slavery, Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Cold War, and the civil rights movement.

National Park Service Seminars

Millions of Americans visit National Park Service museums and historic sites each year. To assist public historians in incorporating recent scholarship in their exhibits and public presentations, the Institute organizes special seminars for Park Service personnel taught by prominent scholars.

Seminars for College Professors

Beginning in the summer of 2002, the Institute extended its seminar program to include college-level educators. In cooperation with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), the Institute offers selected professors of American history at smaller colleges the chance to immerse themselves in an important topic under the leadership of a top scholar in the field. Beginning in the summer of 2006, the seminar program was expanded to include community college professors.

The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program

In this program for college students, History Scholars are awarded stipends to come to New York City for five weeks in the summer to engage in research projects under the guidance of leading historians.
