Learn about the Institute's Work with a Civil Rights Leader and NYC Students

In September 2018, the Gilder Lehrman Institute discovered that the creator of a document at the center of the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama, is now living in New York. We brought the Reverend C. Herbert Oliver to the Gilder Lehrman Collection to talk about his experiences in Birmingham in the 1960s. Over the course of the next year, we continued to find ways to highlight the Reverend Oliver’s visit on our blog.

Announcing the Dear George Washington Contest winners for 2018–2019

The Dear George Washington Contest is an annual writing contest for Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School students in grades 2–5. The contest introduces students to the issues facing early Americans and encourages them to think critically about the founding of the nation. Each student contestant writes a letter of 250–300 words to President George Washington, telling the President what to focus on during his first term.
