Correspondence between the "President and Vice-President of the U. States, on the subject of the course of the latter, in the deliberations of the cabinet of Mr. Monroe, on the occurrences of the Seminole War." Calhoun discloses the correspondence in an effort to rectify, what he believes to be, politically motivated misrepresentations of his conduct in regard to "the Seminole question." Argues that the correspondence shows the different positions held by Calhoun and Jackson. Printed by Duff and Green.

General Jesup writes to General Scott to defend his military actions in Florida during the second Seminole War, which violated Scott's planned campaign. Written in a disrespectful tone, he remarks that "I am not a boy to be lectured by you." Indicates that he will appeal to President Jackson. This was the beginning of a feud that ultimately led to Jesup's dismissal.

"I was out in the woods some distance about a week ago, with the Indian agent, to see King Bowlegs and twenty or thirty of his warriors. He was very polite, spread skins for us on the ground and an awning over head to keep off the sun. All passed off very orderly and quietly, the King and his warriors seated crosslegged around us. One report attested to the bravery of Captain Rains when attacked by Seminoles near Fort King in April, 1840. The other concerned the murder of woman and two children by Seminoles. A detailed personal letter of condolence for the death of Bedford Morgan during the second Seminole War, written to Morgan's brother, Judge Morgan of Baton Rouge, at the insistence of their sister, Ann Gibbes Barker. Explains the circumstances of Morgan's death, as one of eighteen killed on a mission to trade with the Seminole Indians. Claims that the surprise attack and murders by the Seminoles violated a recent peace agreement made with General Macomb at Fort King. Describes the Seminoles as "the most evil & treacherous savages that ever existed."

Lee tells of his family's summer vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains and his work in Missouri "I have been studying mud and water," working at St. Louis harbor and pulling snags from the Missouri River.
