Scolds Hunt for going to Little Rock, Arkansas because Little Rock's climate is too warm. Encourages Hunt to come to Washington, D.C. Mentions Humphreys (possibly Andrew Atkinson Humphreys), Hunt's gout, and Blair's pills for gout. Discusses mutual acquaintances, the repercussions of the Civil War, and emancipation.

Mentions an editorial in the 3 June 1883 issue of an unspecified Herald, which Gibbon had previously requested from Hunt. States that the Herald contained a review of a book by Andrew Atkinson Humphreys (possibly The Virginia campaign of '64 and '65; the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the James, published in 1883). The review refers to a mistake made by Gibbon during the campaign; Gibbon asks Hunt to ascertain Humphreys' source of information regarding details of the book, and mentions Hancock and Mitchell (possibly General Winfield Scott Hancock and W. G.

McLane discusses assisting Henry Jackson Hunt. Possibly referring to a bill Hunt attempted to pass regarding military retirement pay, remarks "I will help Hunt all I can when the committees are organized I will see the chairman of the Military Committee and ascertain [how?] & where I can do the work... " McLane served as a United States Representative from Maryland 1847-1850 and 1879-1883, and Governor of Maryland 1883-1885. General Mackall served as chief-of-staff under Generals Braxton Bragg and Joseph E. Johnston, among other posts.

Year inferred from content. Logan, a United States Senator from Illinois, informs Welles, a lawyer, that he has not had time to review the matter of General Henry Jackson Hunt's retirement. Remarks "I do not doubt the truthfulness of all you say in behalf of Gen. Hunt and I do not now know of any reason why I should oppose his bill." Welles, a Civil War veteran from Ohio, was appointed Brigadier General 13 March 1865 by Brevet.

States "I will look into the legislation proposed and as I now understand the question see no reason why it should not pass." Bingham served as Union Brevet Brigadier General and was awarded the medal of honor for the Wilderness Campaign.

Name of city is illegible. Possibly created by Robert Hughes Fitzhugh, who served in the First New York Light Artillery during the Civil War. Mentions an enclosed letter transmitted by his brother in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from a Congressional member from that district (possibly James Herron Hopkins). Asks Hunt to notify him when Hunt's bill is brought before the House of Representatives. As a postscript, notes "I protest against Mr. Hopkins calling an act of justice relief."
