Discusses an article Cleveland writes for the Youth Companion about what should the government do with ex-Presidents. Writes, "This subject, i think was suggested by me. I have thought of it a great deal and have gone so far as to make a start in its preparation." Asks, however, to change the topic to something about the "importance of rehabilitating and stimulating the determination of good citizenship in its broad sense, as a steadying saving agency against the wildness...that threatens the well being of our (?) nation."

Typed biography of Rear Admiral John G. Walker by Westcott (whose relation to the Walker family is unknown). Commences from his birth in New Hampshire in 1835 and goes to his death 1907. Provides a quick summary of his Civil War service, work in the Navy after the war, and his work in retirement as the President of the Isthmian Canal Commission. Corrections made throughout in several different inks. Stapled in upper left corner with 2 hole punches at the top of the document.

Beside the photo on the front of the postcard, printed text indicates that the lynching took place at Russellville, Kentucky, and the photograph was taken 1 August 1908. Depicts several lynching victims hung on a cedar tree. Caption states that "[t]his is a multiple cedar tree and these four make a total of nine men lynched on this tree, some were white men." Photograph includes two witnesses watching the lynching. A warning sign hangs from the neck of one lynched man. On verso, printed text indicates placement of address and stamp.

Thinks Taft "will be the best" and likes Bryan but thinks he has little chance of winning. Rejects Cummings and La Follette. Believes the trusts will try to elect a president who will favor them but be bad for the people.

Typed on printed stationery dated from Cincinnati. Taft writes Johnson of the Century Magazine that Andrew Carnegie's article on tariffs will prove useful in revising schedules. Carnegie argued, according to Taft, that the US could produce steel more cheaply than abroad.

Title: Americanism in Religion

Roosevelt inscribed this printed edition of his "Open Letter" sent to newspapers to Edward E. Swadener. Roosevelt argues that religious belief should not be a litmus test for candidates, claiming that political history shows people of certain faiths representing constituents with beliefs differing from their own. He dwells at length upon the anti-Catholic attacks on Taft during the last presidential election because of his supposed Catholic sympathies. He argues for tolerance.
