An extraordinary and lengthy letter, full of observations about people he met, especially the crowned heads of Europe. Labeled on page 1 "For nobody's eyes but yours." Written while acting as special ambassador for the United States for King Edward VII's funeral. Considerable discussion of his Guildhall Speech (see GLC 5798). Gives his opinions on British affairs in Africa, the Arch-duke Ferdinand and other European leaders, anarchists vs ultra-clerics etc.

Title: Georgius Agricola De Re Metallica

Also authored by Lou Henry Hoover. Translated from the first Latin edition of 1556 and published by the Mining Magazine, Salisbury House, London, England. Inscribed by Hoover to Edwin A. Elsbach. De Re Metallica or "On the Nature of Metals" was the standard text on mining for two centuries. Agricola reviewed everything then known about mining, including equipment and machinery, means of finding ores, methods of surveying and digging, assaying ores, smelting, mine administration, and occupational diseases of miners. It also contains descriptions of ores and of strata.

Mentions in particular, Chesterton's article, "Divorce," but advises that 100 pounds is too much to pay for it. States that 60 pounds ($300), their regular rate should be sufficient. Suggests that Glyn can write for "Good Housekeeping," and mentions two other magazines that might suit her writing.

Written by a first-class passenger on Carpathia stationery: "Awakened about 11:40 by a violent jar....I went out to the promenade deck and soon learned that we had run into ice...and I had heard a passenger state that he saw an iceberg pass the stern of the vessel...about 70 feet above water.... [I] returned to my stateroom...[h]aving been told there was no danger."

The National League of Negroes

Pamphlet

Title: Taft Denounces Lynching, Tells Afro-American Audience it is Cowardly Murder. President Advocates the Rope for Lynchers

The pamphlet announces that President Taft was endorsed by a conference that convened on the issue of race. The conference marked the inaugural meeting of "The National League of Negroes" and a committee on resolutions was formed. The pamphlet lists resolutions adopted by the committee concerning race, race relations, and goals for the League. These goals include enfranchisement of the African American population by means of the constitution, civil rights, and equality under the law. The pamphlet also contains an excerpt of Taft's speech denouncing lynching.

One undated sepia-toned photograph of attendees at an event at the Union League Club. Pictured is mostly men seated in rows facing backwards towards the camera. A few women sit in the audience as well. Some empty seats marked "Reserved for members." Probably an event at the Union League Club of New York because the photograph is in a collection with two other photographs of Union League meetings (see GLC04471.14, .15). Circa date inferred in the same manner. There is an inscription at the lower right hand corner, but it is illegible.

Date inferred from another photograph of a Union League Club meeting in the same collection (see GLC04471.14). The photograph is mounted on a backer board.

Draft of a speech in which Harding reflects on the history of the railroad and his personal connection with it.
