A print of a photograph of the USS Santiago de Cuba, a wooden, brigantine-rigged, side wheel steamer built in 1861 at Brooklyn, N.Y., was purchased by the Navy on 6 September 1861 at New York City; and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on November 5th, 1861, Comdr. Daniel B. Ridgely in command. Patrolled waters off the Eastern Seaboard for Confederate ships and blockade runners. Decommissioned July 17th, 1865, and sold on September 21st, 1865. Served as a mercantile ship for two decades afterward. Other frigates can be seen docked in the background.
