Bachelder, John B. (1825-1894)
Title: [Collection of sketches and watercolors] [decimalized]
Consists of sketches of mostly scenery but some house portraits, monument studies, and notes. Watercolor and graphite. The dates span from 1852 to 1893 but many are undated scenes of Pennsylvania and the New York Finger Lakes region from 1874-1875. One sketch, accompanied by notes and a clipping relates to the United States Centennial exposition of 1876 (#18, 19 ). Another sketch is of the White House Green Room probably circa 1867 (#6). Some sketches appear to have been removed from sketchbooks. The original order of undated drawings cannot be determined. Includes four engravings of Civil War scenes. For a biographical description of John B. Bachelder, see collateral file and inventory for GLC 2670. A collection of photographs, including two images of John B. Bachelder (one a stereocard), two of Bachelder's home in New Hampshire, and some individual and group portraits of Bachelder and Stevens family members. Many of the portraits are identified by a (slightly) later hand signing itself "M.C.B." Note: Dating of JBB's work should be regarded as highly tentative, given that his work is largely unpublished and unstudied. Descriptive titles, when supplied by the cataloger, are provided in square brackets. Abbreviations: JBB (John B. Bachelder).
