According to Photographic History of the Civil War Vol. 2, p. 1067, image is of Union General George Meade who is seated at center with legs crossed, surrounded by his staff. Major General Andrew A. Humphreys is seated on Meade's right, and seated to the right of Humphreys is the army's provost marshal, Brigadier General Marsena Patrick. Standing immediately on Meade's left is his quartermaster, Brigadier General Rufus Ingalls. Second to Ingall's left is Meade's artilleryman Brigadier General Henry J. Hunt.

Humphreys, Henry J. Hunt, William French, George Sykes, and Gouverneur K. Warren. Signed on the mount by: "Henry J. Hunt Br Genl. Ch. of Art.," "A.A. Humphreys Maj. Genl. Vols Chf. Staff," and "Geo. This report, signed twice by Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, describes the nearly disastrous Wilson-Kautz Raid of June 22-30, 1864. Sheridan tells Maj. Gen. A. A. Humphreys, the Army of the Potomac's chief of staff, about his efforts to find Wilson and Kautz after the rout of their cavalry, and provides details of the battle. His five-line autograph postscript explains that the infantry brigades of Confederate generals Joseph Finegan Saunders (John Caldwell Calhoun Sanders) and William Flank Perry were under the command of Gen. William Mahone.

Major General Meade writes to Lieutenant General Grant to report on a unsuccessful Confederate attacks on Fort Stedman, the repulse of the enemy, and subsequent movements of Union forces under Generals Parke, Wright, and Humphreys. Written a few weeks before Lee's surrender.

Title: [Farewell address to 2nd Army Corps]

One day after Lee's surrender, General Humphreys issues a circular letter congratulating his men on having "done your full share in the Grand Closing scene." Issued as major general commanding; verified as official by Adjutant General Daniel Hart. Lists their achievements including pursuing General Robert E. Lee's army while they were in retreat toward the end of the war, the capture of prisoners, ammunitions, and supplies, and their victorious efforts at Petersburg. Thanks individual officers.

States that the Board should "assume the proper position [of?] the Engineers as an Army Service as well as an Administration branch of the Service for that would be in accordance with existing laws." Discusses seacoast defenses. Refers to Hunt's "dangerous next door neighbor." A pencil note, possibly written by Hunt, states that the last part of Humphrey's letter refers to a powder magazine next to his quarters at Fort Adams, Rhode Island.

Scolds Hunt for going to Little Rock, Arkansas because Little Rock's climate is too warm. Encourages Hunt to come to Washington, D.C. Mentions Humphreys (possibly Andrew Atkinson Humphreys), Hunt's gout, and Blair's pills for gout. Discusses mutual acquaintances, the repercussions of the Civil War, and emancipation.

States that the Herald contained a review of a book by Andrew Atkinson Humphreys (possibly The Virginia campaign of '64 and '65; the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the James, published in 1883). The review refers to a mistake made by Gibbon during the campaign; Gibbon asks Hunt to ascertain Humphreys' source of information regarding details of the book, and mentions Hancock and Mitchell (possibly General Winfield Scott Hancock and W. G.
