Title: to Benjamin F. Butler

Thanks Butler, who in 1815 defended Jackson's actions at New Orleans. Says that no matter how the Senate rules he knows the measures he took were necessary and that "I acted in the defence of New Orleans with the purest principles of a patriot." Relates his poor health and confidence that Van Buren will be the Democratic Nominee for President. When Jackson was defending the city of New Orleans he imposed martial law, ignored habeas corpus, executed deserters, and suspended the state legislature, actions for which Judge Hall fined him $1,000.

Writes to the former Postmaster General, also Jackson's close friend and biographer. Jackson relates how he learned that nullifiers secretly sent an agent to Great Britain for aid during the Nullification Crisis of 1832. "... the nullifiers of the south having sent a secrite agent to Great Britain to obtain aid in carrying into effect their designs against the Union." He details the source of his information so that it might be enclosed with his papers by Kendall. Without naming his former vice president, John C.

Jackson writes that Texas should be annexed to remove the possibility of foreign influence, and to end tampering with slavery. He also writes of his fond memories of the "noble" Russells, his poor health, and his hope that Democrats will bury Whiggery in Tennessee in the presidential election.

Jackson argues that Tyler must withdraw his candidacy to allow the election of Polk and Dallas. If Tyler remains in the race he will split the Democratic vote, and allow Henry Clay to win election. Is confident that Polk can beat Clay, as long as Tyler does not run. Assures Mason that even though Tyler appointed him to his post, Tyler's resignation would not mean that Mason would have to retire. The letter is in the hand of Major Donelson, Jackson's nephew, but signed by Jackson, who says that he is too weak to write.

Concerns the statements of Abbot Lawrence criticizing James Polk's treatment of enslaved people. General Pillow, formerly Polk's law partner, defends Polk. Attests that Polk inherited his enslaved people, treats them well, and has never participated in slave dealing. Relates several accounts of Polk selling enslaved people so they may be with their families. Challenges Lawrence to retract his criticism of Polk.

Andrew Jackson adds postscript notes regarding his health and the inheritance Emma should receive for caring for her aging mother. Sarah Yorke Jackson married the president's adopted son, his wife's nephew, Andrew Jackson, Jr. Emma Y. Donelson married Andrew Jackson Jr.'s twin brother, Thomas Jefferson Donelson, who was not adopted by the president.

States that he is no longer partisan in public, but in private he retains many feelings towards those he once supported. Mentions his surprise that "young Hickory," meaning James K. Polk, dismissed many friends of the old administration. Expresses his disbelief of Louis McLane's claim that he supported Andrew Jackson's veto of the Bank of the United States and affirms his own belief in the stability of state banks provided the Treasury Department supplies "a firm & steady hand."
