A bust showing shoulder and head, Sheridan is wearing the uniform of a Union Army General Officer and his rank is shown as Major General (two stars on shoulder straps). Philip Henry Sheridan was promoted from brigadier to major general following his performance in the battles of Perryville [October 8th, 1862] and Stones River [December 31st, 1862 to January 2nd, 1863]. Promoted to Liutenant General on March 4th, 1869.

Jones, a Civil War soldier, replies to a letter from his wife. Expresses joy that Nancy spends time with Brother Millis, possibly a pastor. Traveled the previous day from Bellefont to Stevenson, Alabama. States that divisions led by Generals [Jefferson C.] Davis and [Philip] Sheridan crossed the Tennessee River the previous day. Informs Nancy that corps led by Generals Alexander M. McCook and Thomas L. Crittenden will cross, or have already crossed the Tennessee between Stevenson and Chattanooga, Tennessee. General Wilson, commander of the 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, writes to Sprague, Adjutant General for the State of New York. Appears to have been directed to "Wm. T. Sprague," which is possibly a mistake, since John Titcomb Sprague was Adjutant General for the State of New York August 1861- January 1865. Wilson reports that Major C. Moore (possibly Caleb Moore), 8th New York Cavalry, has been assigned to command the 22nd Regiment of Cavalry by order of Major General Philip Sheridan.

Major General Wright replies to a letter from his wife while "In the field," following the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. Mentions an enclosed dispatch (within the letter from his wife) from General Philip Sheridan. Referring to Sheridan's dispatch, writes, "It is highly colored, naturally enough perhaps, for he had come up from Winchester thro' the crowd of skulkers who had fled from the battle field!

Sheridan, commander of the Army of the Shenandoah, discusses troop movement with Colonel Edwards, in charge of troops at Winchester, Virginia. Relates that forces were ordered from New Creek to Moorefield, and from Cumberland to Wardensville (all in Virginia or West Virginia). Reports on other troop movement, including the gathering of a large cavalry force on the East side of Blue Ridge. Writes "Should you be attacked by Cavalry, you must whip it, if you can...as you turn line to Harpers Ferry..."

Title: Diary of Milton Whipple

Early entries are brief and mostly record staff changes, troop movements, drills, and the weather but the entries lengthen as Whipple details the Appomattox campaign and the last few weeks leading up to General Robert E. Lee's surrender. On 24 January he writes that his regiment prepared for attack because the Confederate troops were near. States that he heard Fort Brady on the James River in Virginia was destroyed or captured by the Confederates. He reports word of the fall of Charleston, Columbia, Branchville, and Wilmington on 20 and 24 February.

Marked cipher at top and copied on verso. Writes to Major General Sheridan at Winchester, Virginia about General William T. Sherman's movements. "General Sherman's movements will depend on the amount of opposition he meets from the enemy." Feels much of the danger has passed. Informs that Sherman is aiming to join with General John Schofield around Goldsboro.
