Title: [Pennsylvania land grant to William Lane]

Partially printed land patent counter-signed by JamesTrimble as Deputy Secretary and witnessed by Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Mifflin. Lane obtained the land, called "Oatland" in Bald Eagle township, from Isaiah Davis. The document describes the specific boundaries of the tract, the sale of which was orchestrated through 1793 and 1794. A note signed by Matthew Irvin on the verso indicates that the patent was recorded in the state records on 20 April 1795. Large star shaped paper seal on top left corner.

Thanks the recipient for information in a previous letter, about the "hostile disposition of the Indians on the Frontiers." Shares his hope that federal treaties will ease the recipient's apprehensions and "produce a general peace." Introduces Col. Proctor, Mr. Boone and Mr. Linklain, who have brought the present letter on their trip to the "interior counties," and asks the recipient to help and accommodate them if possible.

Mifflin, President of Congress, encloses an Act of Congress directing Knox to ascertain from the British Commander in Chief of North America precisely when the British will leave their posts within the boundaries of the United States (possibly refers to Frederick Haldimand; see GLC02437.03019). Also asks that Knox arrange for cannon and stores at the posts to be delivered to West Point or another convenient location. Signer of the U.S. Constitution.

Land Transaction involving Dr. Benjamin Rush and Jesse Brook. Rush purchases an area of land in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania called "Upland"; document includes a handwritten description of the boundaries of the property. Witnessed by Thomas Mifflin as Governor of Pennsylvania and by Deputy Secretary James Shimble. Features large star shaped paper seal and engraved stamp printed by F. Bailey. On verso, docket dated April 30, 1795 signed [Wash. Irvin], features 2 diamond shaped paper seals.
