Title: Extracts from minutes of our yearly meeting of Pennsylvania & New Jersey, held in Philadelphia by adjournments from the 23rd day of the ninth month.

One copy of a meeting minutes dated September 23-28, 1776. States that Quakers should not participate in governments active in war, or contribute to the promotion of war through business or other activity. Condemns all forms of slavery and indentured servitude, and requires all Quakers to free anyone so held. All need to support religious education for children. Clerical copy certified by James Moon. Extracted and prepared by James Pemberton, clerk to the yearly meeting.

Title: To the president and Council of Pennsylvania. The remonstrance of the subscribers, freemen, and inhabitants of the city of Philadelphia.

Written by imprisoned pacifist Quakers to express their grievances. They claim their confinement to be unlawful. This is demonstrated by the ninth and tenth sections of the Declaration of Rights, which call for disclosure of accusations along with a speedy trial, and the necessity of a warrant for search and seizure, respectively. Argue that the warrant directing their confinement has been alarming and illegal stretch of power. Lists the names of twenty of the imprisoned men. Evans 15500.

The letter is written in traditional Quaker fashion without reference to the pagan names of months, and instead uses numbers for dates throughout. Written by Pemberton, a Quaker merchant and philanthropist in Philadelphia, to Brown, a well-known Quaker merchant in Providence, Rhode Island. References Brown's letter of 9 May 1788. Says he is getting the act of the Massachusetts Assembly (probably a law on the slave trade) republished in the newspaper with the most extensive circulation in Massachusetts. Sends along information and new publications on the anti-slave trade crusaders in Britain.…

Discusses the anti-slavery activities of Quakers in the U.S. and a dispute over admission of blacks to Quaker church due to fears of intermarriage. He requests a copy of Bishop Wilson's bible be sent to him. He mentions other correspondence and the marriage of his second daughter.
