Mentions that the town's water supply during the winter will be from ice they haul from some of the fresh water creeks. Postscript dated 1 October states he had to send the letter by mail instead. Describes "hauling wood up close to the cabin, as they come and take it right from ones door, if not watched." Comments on the brilliant northern lights. Plans to mush with Jim Reed and the dogteam to stake ground. Supposes McKinley was elected President, but it will be a long time before he knows for sure. Brown served as Paymaster Yeoman on the USS Monocacy during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. The Monocacy had served in Chinese waters for nearly 30 years, and was ordered to recapture the forts at Taku on 11 June 1900. He was trapped with the US Marines and multinational force in Tientsin.

Probably an event at the Union League Club of New York because the photograph is in a collection with two other photographs of Union League meetings (see GLC04471.14, .15). Circa date inferred in the same manner. There is an inscription at the lower right hand corner, but it is illegible.

The rest of the men cannot be identified with certainty. The photograph has suffered some discoloration. The image is mounted on a backer board.
