Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes is facing towards his right, looking diagonally left. Appears to be wearing a three-piece suit, with the vest unbuttoned and a black tie, mostly hidden by his beard. Mounted to a backerboard (9.9 x 22.3 cm). Board printed with a fading blue rectangle frame (8.8 x 7.6 cm) for the engraving.
