Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Certifies receipt of Governor Richard Caswell of North Carolina 466 pounds, 13 shillings to cover the expenses of attending the first and second Continental Congress. There are four symmetrical holes in the page causing text loss.

Hewes was a North Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress 1774-1776, and 1779. He was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
