At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

To Elhajah Tredway Gent. GREETING

You being the General Assembly of this State accepted to be ensight of the 10th Company or Train & in the 24th Regement in said fate.

Reposing special truth and confidence in your Fidelity, Courage, and good conduct, I do by Virtue of the laws of this State, me thereunto enbling, appoint and impower you to take the said Company into your Care and charges as their Ensign. carefully and diligently to discharge that office and truth, exercising your inferior Officers and Soldiers in the Use of their Arms, according to the Rules and Discipline of War, ordained and established by Laws of this State keeping them in good Order and Government, and commanding them to obey you as their Ensign and you are to observe all such orders and Directions as fromTime to Time you shall receive, either from me, or from other your superior Officer, pursuant Truft hereby reposed in you.
