Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes an act prohibiting trading with enslaved people, an act regulating the survey and sale of lands recently acquired from the Cherokee, and "An act to prevent free persons of colour from migrating into this State, for the good government of such persons resident in the States, and for other purposes." Contains many other laws.
