Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Front-page article describes Lincoln's address at the Gettysburg Battlefield to dedicate the cemetery. Also prints on page two the speech Edward Everett gave at Gettysburg. Other front page articles detail Civil War news, such as the rebels advancing upon Knoxville and the speech of Reverend Henry Ward Beecher at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Prints news on affairs in France, specifically Napoleon, and updates from Washington D.C. Contains public notices and advertisements.
