Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collateral to Hammond's copy of Sherman's Memoirs (GLC 398.02). Sherman presents Hammond, his former Chief of Staff, with a copy of his Memoirs, and asks him to review the " ... account of the affair at Chickasaw and Arkansas Post" and also to check " ... as soon as possible in your memory of my personal interviews with individuals."
