Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A nine year contract for providing goods to the American colonies. Lists the prices of over three hundred items, including implements for various artisans and farmers. Also contains two articles relating to labor. Signed well before any formal French agreement (or the Hortalez & Cie arrangement) with Congress. Also signed by Chaussade. Original cover disbound, but included.

Pierre Babaud de la Chaussade was a leading French industrialist who did much of his business supplying the French Navy.
Antoine de Sartine, comte d'Alby, was the French Minister of the Navy.
