At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written "Before Vicksburg." Grant, commanding Army and Department of the Tennessee, writes to Lieutenant Colonel Reynolds, Chief Quartermaster. Indicates that he is sending boats from his location for the transport of General James Birdseye McPherson's remaining troops. Docketed twice; once in pencil.

I am sending boats up from here to bring down the remainder of McPhersons command. Should the number of boats prove more than is necessary for the force to bring send them back nevertheless.
I will want soon not only all the boats that have been here but many [2] more.
You need not detain boats not already held until directed to do so but release now.
