At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. Explains that the arrival of the French fleet has induced General George Washington and the Continental Congress to "call for a number of Teams and Horses." Seeks wagons and horses from Moore. Discusses how to obtain the horses and wagons and branding them. Explains that impressment is permitted. A post script asks for frequent updates on his progess. Written in the hand of Timothy Matlack, Secretary of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania.

Joseph Reed (1741-1785) was a lawyer, Revolutionary statesman, and soldier. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress from Pennsylvania in 1777 and was chosen president of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania in 1778.
