At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Know all Men, by these Presents, that I Daneil Jenings Planter in Loudon County am held and firmly bound unto John Muir in the Town of Alexandria …….. in the just and full Sum of Three hundred & Eighty four pounds Seven Shillings & two pence ½ penny Virginia Money to be paid unto the said John Muir or to ……….. his certain Attorney, his Heirs, Executors, Administrators, or Assigns; to which Payment, well and truly to be made, I do bind my self my - Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, firmly by these Presents. Sealed with my Seal, and dated this Nineteenth - Day of November - Anno Dom. One thousand seven hundred and seventy Four
The Condition of the above Obligation is such, that if the above bound Daniel Jenings …. do and shall well and truly pay, or cause to be paid, unto the said John Muir or to …… his certain Attorney, his Executors, Administrators, or Assigns, the just Sum of One hundred & Ninety Two pounds three Shillings, & Seven pence One farthing Like Money with Interest thereon, on or before the first day of next March - then the above Obligation to be void, or else to remain in full Force and Virtue.
