Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Portrait engraving of Marshall seated, in judge's robes. Printed signature of Marshall underneath. Possibly based on a painting by J. B. Martin, as the name is printed under the engraving.

Marshall was appointed Secretary of State in 1800 and Chief Justice of the United States in 1801.
