Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Manuscript in clerical hand with clerical signature. Marshall expresses the opinion that "only the fine imposed by the Act of Congress ought to be Collected." He concludes by noting that foreign subjects and citizens are not subject to the militia laws.

Marshall was appointed Chief Justice of the United States in 1801 and served until his death.
