Wishes to move on Tupelo, destroy the railroad there, and also destroy all enemy boats on the Yazoo river. Says he may move to Columbus to improve his communications.

Head Quarters, Dept. of West Ten

Maj: Gen. W.S. Rosecrans
Comd.g. the Army of the Miss,
Gen.
Ascertain through scouts if it will be practicable now since the late rains to move an army South. If so we should move as far towards Tupelo as practicable and destroy the railroad to prevent the possibility of an attack here without a long march.
I want as soon as possible to set an expedition on foot with a view to destroying any vessels the rebels may have in the Yazoo river. Before doing this our front here should be cleared out.
If you think this move, the one on Tupelo, can be made you may commence preparing for it as [2] soon as possible.
In addition to your own troops I might give you some from Ross' command.
I think of going to Columbus to-morrow with a view of communicating more readily with Steele, Sherman and the Gunboat commanders in reference to this other move.
Respectfully &c.
U. S. Grant
