Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Secretary of the Navy Toucey orders Conover to direct the U.S.S. "Dale" to "proceed to the Navy Yard at Portsmouth, N.H." Marked "Duplicate" at top of page. Written at the "Navy Department."

Thomas A. Conover was a Captain, later Commodore in the United States Navy, and the Commander of the African Squadron.
Isaac Toucey was the Secretary of the Navy, and also served as a Congressman and Senator from Connecticut, United States Attorney General, and Governor of Connecticut.
