Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Criticizes the unexpected marriage of a mutual friend. Mentions the female population in Newbury-Port and other personal matters. Discusses the intended judiciary system and comments that it will take many alterations and additions before it is perfect.

At this point, Adams had just graduated from Harvard. Freeman was a former classmate.
