Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed document signed by Adams as Massachusetts Governor and John Avery as Secretary. A note on the verso dated 7 March 1797 and signed by William Graham and Samuel Freeman attests that Lewis took the oath of office. Adams' signature is shakey due to his failing health. The "S" in Samuel Adams' signature has been affected by water damage. Includes a paper seal.
