Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Same-day "Extra" printing of Lincoln's first inaugural address; the concluding portion of the speech is not printed. Also: Paragraph criticizing Lincoln for secretly passing through Baltimore (dubbed "Lincoln's pass over"). Report from Capt. Foster at Fort Moultrie; another report of 2 Dahlgren guns arriving in Charleston from Richmond, with more munitions on the way. On verso "Lincoln inaugural" is written in ink.
