Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Return of the non-commissioned officers and privates of the New York Brigade of foot commanded by James Clinton. Includes terms of service of those engaged for the period 1780-1782.

During the Revolutionary War, Cortlandt served as lieutenant colonel. He was mustered out of the military as brigadier general for gallant conduct at the siege of Yorktown under General Lafayette, and served as a United States Representative from New York 1793-1808.
