Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Hopkins, former Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy, as deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly. Cosigned by committee member John Jenckes. Order to pay Job Greene one hundred and thirteen pounds and five shillings. Endorsed by John Warner on behalf of Job Greene on verso. Joseph Clarke was state treasurer of Rhode Island for forty years.
