Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Front side dated 6 April 1780 confirms receipt from John Lovett of $800 for a share of the prizes of the first cruise of the privateer ship, the Pilgrim, Hugh Hill Commander. Other side details two accounts for prize monies signed by John Lovett. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts. He served as the agent for the Pilgrim's prizes.
