Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Details the settlement of 45 1/8 shares of the Brigantine Hope prize captured by the privateer ship, the Pilgrim on its first cruise with Hugh Hill as captain. Also mentions the captors shares in the Dalton lands. From the estate of John Lovett, a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts. He served as the agent for the Pilgrim's prizes.
