Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned as a witness by William Leach. Certifies that Beckford gave to John Lovett 1/2 of a share of the prize captured by the privateer ship, the Pilgrim, Hugh Hill commander. In return, Beckford signs that he received from Lovett $220. Note on reverse signed by Lovett. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts. He served as the agent for the prizes captured by the Pilgrim.
