At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appoints the recipient as Adjutant of the eighteenth Connecticut militia regiment. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1778 is the author of this letter. At the time he was the colonel of the eighteenth Connecticut militia regiment. He was also a lawyer. The Jonathan Humphry who died in 1812 was the recipient of this letter. He would later become colonel of the regiment himself.
