Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cosigned by T. Seymour. Requesting from Treasurer John Lawrence payment of 18 pounds 13 shillings for a gun lock Hanks manufactured. Costs should be charged to the state of Connecticut. Note on reverse signed by Uriah Hanks certifies that he received the money. Hanks was a prominent gun maker from Connecticut.
