Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three separate notes on one page all certifying the receipt of food items like bread, sugar, and coffee. First note signed by Shed, second by William Cave, and the third signed with a mark by Joseph Abbott. The first note states the goods were received of Joseph Noyes for 10 men belonging to the State Brig Hazard. Second note states the goods were received from Noyes for Cave and three men belonging to the Monmouth. The third states the goods are for Abbott and the men of the ship Sally.
