Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that it is increasingly important that Captain Willoe go to Canada. Requests passports be granted for Willoe, two servants, and three women to sail to Halifax with a Flag of Truce. He wants Heath to get a passport that will admit the vessels into port and asks him to advise what papers Willoe needs in order to prevent being taken as a prize by a privateer ship. Phillips was a British general. Heath was a Continental general.
