Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Deblois, a loyalist writing during the American Revolution, thanks Clarke for forwarding him a letter from John Glover, a colonel in the Continental Army, and asks him to forward a letter to Nathaniel Clark and Jeremiah Clark, possibly the commander of the guard ship Pigot in Providence.

Stephen Deblois was a loyalist merchant from Newport, Rhode Island.
Joseph Clarke was the Rhode Island General Treasurer, living in Providence.
