Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly created in an area known as Patuxet, Massachusetts. Lists the names of 13 captains. States that this document is intended for General Enoch Titcomb. Possibly created by Colonel Josiah Whitney.

Jonathan Titcomb served as commander general of Essex County troops during the Revolutionary War, and later as major general of the state militia. Patuxet was a Wampanoag community located on the Plymouth Bay.
