Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Receipt to the Committee of War in Rhode Island for Thomas Howard to receive his wages, which is 9 shillings New York currency, as a member of Major Burkett's Company. Says to pay unto Cornelius Culnon. The receipt also instructs to "deduct the Same Out of the Wages first due to me as a Soldier." Howard signed his mark with an "X." Document appears to have been written by Andrew Leishman.
