Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Note signed by twelve enlisted men asking Captain Edgel, spelled Edggall, to give all their pay to Lieutenant Ebenezer Hill. Signed by John Claflin, Daniel Hunt, Samuel Wheelock, Jesse Miller, Isaac Smith, Ebenezer Littlefield, John Fairbank, Ezra Bown, Joseph Mors, Eli Lealand, Joshua Hemenway, Daniel Knowlton. All the men were privates, except Hunt who was a corporal, and Smith who was a fifer.

Ebenezer Hill later served as a selectmen from Holliston.
